Tripod was the first company that I used to make my very first website. At the time, it was all relatively easy to use and it had a useful help section which filled me in with all the things I needed to know. Luckily, Tripod hasnt changed much and still provides free webspace to millions of people in the easiest way possible. Like most free web services, it is supported by advertising. In Tripods case, they are popups. The addresses for your site would look something like 'http://members.tripod.co.uk/your_member_name' As you can see, the domains are pretty long, however the service is good, and you could always sort out a shorter redirect name. .

Angelfire is part of the Lycos network, and also offers free webspace for its users. As you know, I built my first site on Tripod. I advised my sister to also use Tripod, however she opted for Angelfire. As I ended up maintaining her site quite a lot, I was surprised how easy everything was to use. Interface wise, its a lot easier to navigate around Angelfire, than Tripod. Everything is much simpler. Angelfires tutorials arent as good as Tripods, however they still contain an adequate amount of info, that will probably see you through ok. Angelfire offer you 50mb of webspace which is pretty generous, and the domain names are similar to 'www.angelfire.com/me3/yoursitehere/'. I personally prefer Tripod because of its tutorials, however Angelfire is still a great service and well worth checking out..

GeoCities is the webspace service run by Yahoo. Geocities is an extremely popular service, though that is probably down to the popularity of Yahoo more than anything..the quality of the site tools are pretty average. You get 15 megabytes of webspace to play with, you can transfer files using your favorite FTP program and there are a variety of templates that you can use for your site. What lets this service down is the advertisements. Geocities has probably the most annoying and intrusive adverts on the net, and is what stopped me from ever using the service. If you dont mind the adverts, its worth a look. .

Free monthly hosting for 12 months. You get 25MB web space, unlimited email addresses, your own chi-bin and full FTP access. You can use PHP4, there are no banner adverts or pop-ups and it comes with free technical support, 7 Days a week. Only draw back is you have to pay a small one-time set-up fee, but it's a small price for all the stuff they give you..

Exit.de are a website that I discovered a few months ago, and I was surprised by the quality of its service. For a start they offer 25mb of webspace...they also throw in CGI (Perl), FTP uploading as well as an online editor alternative. After setting up your site, Exit.de also submit your site to all the major search engines, which makes life that much easier. The only slight problem with this site, is that its in German, though if you can find the British flag down the right hand side of the screen, you will get a translation! Other than that minor annoyance, this is a great service, and an unknown gem! Oh..I forgot to say....Exit.de...ISNT advert supported!!.

Another free webspace provider is 75megs.com. Unlike a lot of the free services, 75Megs are extremely generous with the amount of webspace they give you to play with. Yep, you guessed it, with this site you can get 75 megs of web space! Also on offer is FTP access, form mail, a message board, subdomains, web tools, easy editing access, and much more. Also to help ease the pressure of being a webmaster (no..really) they have search engine submission tools, web master tools, email facilities and more! Overall, a feature rich service, and pretty efficient. The only major pain is that its advert supported, but then again most popular services are these days..

If your a person who doesn't have patience as one of your gifts, FortuneCity might be the best site to go for. They offer a webspace account that is activated as soon as you register, and offer a reasonably comprehensive set of tools for constructing your website that much easier. .

YourMailingListProvider.com, despite having a rediculously long name, is a very good mailing list service which you can use on your website. This site allows you to distribute your newsletter in HTML or text format. All you have to do to install the newsletter on your site is insert a few lines of HTML code into your web page. This newsletter service doesnt have a subscriber limit and does not feature adverts within the mailings. Overall, a good, solid service..
